It is 8pm on a Tuesday evening, and I am busy annoyance the Olympic associations of various Caribbean countries by asking them which national anthem will play if one of their athletes wins amber in Beijing. "There ar historical reasons for this," says Derek Scott, prof of critical musicology at Leeds University. "The UK's was the first real national anthem in 1745. And it was adopted by lots of other countries: Sweden, Germany, even Russia at one point. The idea developed that it was only the words that were significant in expressing national quality. The tune to God Save the Queen was seen as meaning 'national anthem' and the words were what made it appropriate to each country."

People know what a home anthem is supposed to sound like - a western military march - so they make sure theirs sounds the same. "Countries use of goods and services anthems to put themselves on the world stage," he says.

In malice of this, there are a handful of anthems that do stand stunned - either because they use non-western instruments, scales and tunes, or because they take a western anthem and then toy with it, making it solemn or funny, and entirely their own. The Verve, Chemical Brothers to kick off T In The Park

Today (July 11) is the first day of the T In The Park festival 2008, with The Verve, The Chemical Brothers and The Futureheads among the highlights of the first day of the festival.

The aforementioned Verve are set to play a headline slot tonight on the Main Stage, with The Chemical Brothers headlining the NME/Radio 1 Stage. The Futureheads will head things up over in the King Tut's Wah Wah Tent.

Stereophonics and KT Tunstall are set to play on the Main Stage before The Verve, while The Wombats will be the first band to gracwe the NME/Radio 1 Stage this afternoon.

Los Campesinos! kick things off over at the King Tut's Wah Wah Tent, with hotly-tipped act Kids In Glass Houses playing later on.

Opera legend Joan Sutherland recovering in hospital after breaking legs

GENEVA - Opera legend Joan Sutherland is recovering well after breaking both legs during a fall at her Swiss home, her agent said Monday.

"She had an accident while doing the gardening, and somehow managed to break both her legs," agent David Sigall said.

The 81-year-old soprano is now in a Swiss hospital undergoing rehabilitation, Sigall told The Associated Press by telephone from London.

"She has been moved to the rehabilitation section," he said, adding that Sutherland would likely remain there for up to eight weeks before being allowed to put any weight on her legs.

"All is well except I'm sure she's not pleased," said Sigall, who had not yet spoken to Sutherland himself.

The accident occurred June 24 while the Australian singer was picking flowers in the garden and lost her balance, said an assistant reached at Sutherland's home near Montreux.

The assistant, who asked not to be named, said Sutherland underwent successful surgery at a nearby hospital and was in good spirits.

Sutherland's husband, conductor Richard Bonynge, initially cancelled a planned performance with Opera Australia later this month but was convinced by Sutherland to carry out the engagement, the assistant said.

"Mr. Bonynge has now gone to Australia" to conduct Gaetano Donizetti's "Lucia di Lammermoor," Sigall said.

Sutherland's performance in the difficult title role in a 1959 Covent Garden revival widely is seen as her breakthrough in an international career that lasted until 1991.

Sigall said Sutherland had no previous accidents.

"She's always been in pretty robust health."
